Cacao The Ancient Superfood

Cacao The Ancient Superfood

Chocolate is one of the most beloved foods on earth. Yet the plant behind it, cacao, is rarely seen for what it truly is: one of nature’s most remarkable superfoods. For thousands of years, cacao has been revered by ancient civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs as a sacred food, used in rituals, medicine, and daily nourishment. and even as a currency.

Today, cacao is mostly consumed as processed chocolate, often stripped of its original nutritional and cultural value. But when cacao is grown with care and minimally processed, it reveals something extraordinary: a nutrient-dense, mood-supporting, and deeply nourishing plant.

At GAYA, cacao is not just an ingredient. It is a story of nature, farmers, biodiversity, and conscious sourcing.

Why Cacao Is a True Superfood

Raw cacao beans contain an impressive range of beneficial compounds that support both body and mind.

Rich in antioxidants

Cacao is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet, containing powerful flavonoids that help protect cells from oxidative stress and support cardiovascular health.

Natural mood support

Cacao contains compounds such as:

  • Theobromine – a gentle, long-lasting energy stimulant

  • Phenylethylamine (PEA) – sometimes called the “love molecule”, therefore it was often promoted as an aphrodisiac across the french bourgeoisie

  • Tryptophan – a precursor to serotonin

These compounds help explain why cacao has long been associated with feelings of wellbeing, openness, and connection.

High in essential minerals

Cacao is naturally rich in Magnesium, Iron, Potassium and Zinc. Magnesium alone plays a role in hundreds of metabolic processes, supporting muscle function, relaxation, and nervous system balance. Yet despite these remarkable properties, cacao is rarely perceived as a superfood because most chocolate products contain only a fraction of the original cacao and large amounts of sugar and additives. To rediscover cacao’s true potential, we must also look at how it is grown and sourced.

Where Our Cacao Comes From

Behind every cacao bean is a farmer, a forest ecosystem, and a community. Our cacao comes from organic fair trade farms in the Dominican Republic, where smallholder families cultivate cacao within biodiverse agroforestry systems. But this success story did not always look this way.

From Struggle to Success: Supporting Dominican Cacao Farmers

In the past, many small farming families in the Dominican Republic struggled to earn a living from conventional cacao production. Everything changed when organic agriculture pioneers began supporting farmers locally and helped create a strong cooperative network. In 2002, our supplier helped establish one of the country’s most successful smallholder organizations:

Fundación Dominicana de Productores Orgánicos (FUNDOPO).

What began with 84 farming families has now grown into a community of more than 3,000 members. Through organic farming and Fair Trade partnerships, farmers now receive Fair Trade minimum prices, Organic premiums and stable, predictable income. This transformation has helped create long-term economic security for thousands of families.

Traceable Organic Fair Trade Cacao

Transparency matters. Our supplier processes the cacao locally in four dedicated processing centers, where the beans are carefully fermented and dried to develop their full flavor. The primary variety cultivated is Hispaniola cacao, known for its mild and balanced aroma, making it ideal for high cacao content products. To ensure full transparency, a barcode traceability system introduced in 2019 allows every processed bean batch to be traced directly back to the farmers who grew it. This level of traceability helps connect consumers with the true origin of their cacao.

From the Caribbean to Switzerland

Once processed, the cacao beans travel by container ship to Europe. But the journey does not stop there. Since 2023, our supplier has improved the climate footprint of their cacao supply chain by transporting beans via Rhine ships to Basel, Switzerland, reducing emissions compared to traditional trucking routes. Every improvement along the supply chain helps reduce the environmental impact of cacao.

Farming with Nature: Cacao from Agroforestry

Unlike industrial monoculture farming, our cacao grows in agroforestry systems that resemble natural forest ecosystems. Cacao trees grow alongside fruit trees, shade trees and diverse plant species.

This approach offers multiple benefits:

  • Increased biodiversity

  • Improved soil fertility

  • Greater resilience to climate change

  • Natural pest resistance without pesticides

In fact, 7% of the cultivation area remains untouched forest, in accordance with Bio Suisse certification standards. These farms are pesticide-free, support humus-rich soils, and rely primarily on natural rainfall rather than irrigation. The result is cacao grown in harmony with nature.

A Long-Term Partnership with Farmers

Our supplier acts as a long-term partner to smallholder families. They purchase the entire harvest from FUNDOPO, provide pre-financing, and pay farmers directly so families receive income immediately. Farmers also benefit from:

  • Training in organic agriculture

  • Access to cacao seedlings to rejuvenate aging plantations

  • Higher yields and better quality harvests

On average, farmers receive about 35% more than the world market price thanks to Fair Trade and organic premiums. At the supplier’s headquarters in Santo Domingo, around 72% of employees are women, supporting local economic empowerment.

Rediscovering Cacao

When cacao is grown responsibly, processed with care, and enjoyed close to its natural form, it becomes something very different from the sugary chocolate products most of us know.

It becomes:

  • a nutrient-rich superfood

  • a source of natural wellbeing

  • a connection to farmers and ecosystems

  • and a symbol of how food can be produced in harmony with nature

Cacao is something most of us already love. Perhaps it is time we start recognizing it for what it truly is.

One of nature’s original superfoods. Let's tap into the wisdom of ancient civilizations and enable it for our modern societies.
